Dear Friends,
We are so excited to share with you the fabulous news of the next stage in the development of our community, here in Nanaimo and central Vancouver Island!
It has been almost five years since we arrived in Nanaimo. We never expected to find such a warm and committed community here and who would have imagined that five years later, our community would have a vibrant Hebrew School, well-attended classes, women’s events and holiday gatherings and hold regular Shabbat services, host a summer camp and celebrate Bar and Bat Mitzvahs? We are so touched by the commitment that our community has shown to keep Judaism alive. From our major donors to the monthly and occasional gifts, so many of you have been contributing to this vital cause. Without your support, none of this would have been possible.
Thank G-d, in the last five years we have laid the foundations for a flourishing Jewish community life and a first synagogue ever in Central Vancouver Island.
We are ready for the next phase!
One of the most important objects in every Jewish community is a Sefer Torah. A Torah Scroll that we read from in Shul on Shabbat and holidays and dance with on Simchat Torah.
For the very first time, we have an opportunity to write a Sefer Torah by our community and for our community, G-d willing for many years to come.
This project was initiated by the Lintott family who donated the funds to hire a scribe to write the Sefer Torah in memory of their father and grandfather, Michael Rosenfeld.
Michael, who was passionate about his family’s Judaism and cared deeply for the continuity of Jewish life, will now have a Sefer Torah here in Nanaimo as a living legacy for his children and grandchildren.
The writing of the Torah will begin here in Nanaimo, G-d willing, on October 25, 2020 and by G-d’s grace, we will celebrate its completion in the upcoming summer with a great and joyful parade through our city streets.
We would like to invite you to participate in the writing of the Nanaimo Torah and be part of this great milestone for our community. You have the option of purchasing a letter, a word, a Parsha or a Chumash and dedicating it in honour or in memory of your loved ones.
By endowing a letter, a word, or a verse, it is as though you have written your own Torah Scroll - this fulfilling the final Mitzvah in the Torah.
On October 25, 2020, a scribe will come to our Shul to begin the writing of the Torah. For any dedication, you will be able to assist the Sofer in writing a letter in the Torah Scroll. Due to COVID-19 there will only be one family in the Shul at a time.
Our sages tell us that this mitzvah has the special power of bestowing G-d’s blessings on participants and their families for all their material and spiritual needs.
We encourage you to join us in making history here, in central Vancouver Island!
